Putnam County was created in January 18, 1849 and was named for Benjamin A. Putnam, a soldier who fought in the First Seminole War. Putnam has a total area of 827 square miles. This county is bordered by Clay County, Florida to the north; St. Johns County, Florida to the northeast; Flagler County, Florida to the east; Volusia County, Florida to the southeast; Marion County, Florida to the southwest; Alachua County, Florida to the west, and; Bradford County, Florida to the northwest. Putnam County is composed of five incorporated areas, one census-designated place or CDP, and several unincorporated areas. Incorporated areas in Putnam County include the City of Crescent City, Town of Interlachen, City of Palatka (County Seat), Town of Pomona Park, and Town of Welaka. Its sole CDP is the community of East Palatka.
