North Dakota Details

North Dakota is a state in the North Central part of the United States. It is bounded by Minnesota, across the Red River of the North on the east, South Dakota on the south, Montana on the west, and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba on the north. North Dakota has a total land area of 68,976 sq mi (178,648 sq km) and is the 19th largest state by area in the United States.

The name North Dakota is derived from the Sioux tribe which means “allies”. This state is also popularly known as the Sioux State, Flickertail State, Peace Garden State, and Rough Rider State. It became the 39th member of the confederate in November 2, 1889.

North Dakota was discovered by the French Canadians led by Sieur de la Verendrye in 1738-1740. It was acquired by the US as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. This state remained largely unsettled until the construction of railroads in the 1870s and 1880s.

North Dakota is largely a rural state. Ninety percent (90%) of its total land area is utilized as a farm. This state ranks first in the production of wheat and other agricultural products such as barley, rye, sunflowers, dry edible beans, honey, oats, flaxseed, sugar beets, hay, beef cattle, sheep and hogs. It is also a leading source of minerals such as coal and oil as well as natural gas, lignite, clay, sand and gravel.

This state is known for its waterfowl, grouse, pheasant, deer hunting and pike fishing. It boasts of 20 state parks and recreation areas. Its major tourist attractions include the International Peace Garden near Dunseith, Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site near Williston, Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site in Stanton, the State Capitol at Bismarck, the Badlands, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park.

The state capital of North Dakota is the city of Bismarck which has a population of 55,532 and was actually founded in 1872. Its largest city is Fargo which has an estimated population of 99,200 and was founded in 1881.
