Georgia Details

Georgia is considered the largest state in the southeast. It has a land area of 57,906 square miles (149,977 square kilometer) and a total of 159 counties. Georgia, named in honor of George II of England, is one of the original 13 colonies that revolted against the British rule during the American Revolution.

Historical write-ups on Georgia states that a Spanish explorer named Hernando de Soto first traveled parts of Georgia in 1540. However, it was Gen. James Oglethorpe who established the first settlement in Georgia in 1733 as a refuge for English debtors. Oglethorpe later defeated the Spanish invaders in the Battle of Bloody Marsh last 1742. Georgia was the scene of the extensive military action during the Civil War. It became a member of the Confederate on January 18, 1861.

Georgia is the 24th largest US state. It borders on east with South Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean, Alabama and Florida on west; Tennessee and North Carolina on north; and bordered by the Blue Ridge Mountains on north Georgia. It has a population of more than nine million residents. Its capital city is Atlanta, which is also its most populated city. Atlanta is also tagged as the communications and transportation center for the Southeast and the area’s chief distributor of goods.
Georgia is a leading producer of paper and board, tufted textile products and processed chicken. It also manufactures transportation equipment, food products, apparel and chemicals. Georgia is also an important source of bauxite, kaolin, and marble. Big time corporations such as Coca-Cola Company, CNN, and Arby’s have their headquarters in Georgia. Major attractions in Georgia include the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Andersonville Prison Park and National Cemetery, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, the Little White House at Warm Springs where Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt died in 1945, Sea Island, and the enormous Confederate Memorial at Stone Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, and Cumberland Island National Seashore.

The state offers many recreational activities where you can play golf, camping, picnicking, hiking, fishing, and of course swimming and there are lots of magnificent white sandy beaches in this state alone.
