Virginia Details

Virginia is state located in the south central part of the United States. It is bounded by Atlantic Ocean to the east, North Carolina and Tennessee to the south, Kentucky and West Virginia to the west, and Maryland and the District of Columbia to the north and northeast. Virginia’s history is very colorful. This state witnessed the end of both the American Revolution and the Civil War. This is where eight US Presidents came from, hence the name “Mother of Presidents”.

Virginia’s income comes from its diverse manufacturing and retail industries as well as its service sector which include business services such as computer and data processing services. Its manufacturing industries deals with transportation equipment, food processing, electronic and other electrical equipment, chemicals, textiles, apparel, lumber, wood products and furniture. Virginia is among the US top ten producers of tomatoes, tobacco, peanuts, apples, summer potatoes, sweet potatoes, snap beans, turkeys and broilers. It also boasts of a large dairy industry and impressive mineral deposits. Virginia mines coal, crushed stone, lime and kyanite.

Vernon, home of George Washington; Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson; Stratford, home of the Lees; Richmond, capital of the Confederacy and of Virginia; and Williamsburg, the restored Colonial capital. Other interesting sites to see in this state include the Shenandoah National Park, Colonial National Historical Park, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, the Booker T. Washington birthplace near Roanoke, Arlington House (the Robert E. Lee Memorial), Luray Caverns, the Skyline Drive, and the Blue Ridge National Parkway.

The capital of Virginia is Richmond and its largest city is Virginia Beach. This state has an estimated population of 7,769,089 (2008 estimate) and is the 12th most populated state in the US.
