Maine Details

Maine is a state in the New England region located in the northernmost portion of the United States. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and east and New Brunswick to the north and northeast. Canadian Province of Quebec lies on its northwest.
Maine’s capital is Augusta. Its largest city, however, is Portland. This state has an estimated 1.4 million residents and ranks 38th in the US in terms of population.

Maine was first discovered by a French Explorer Samuel de Champlain and named it Acadia sometime in 1604. The English later established the first settlement in the area in 1607. It was fought over by French and English during 17th and 18th centuries until the French was defeated. The territory of Maine became part of Massachusetts when the United States confederation was formed. Maine became the 23rd state as part of Missouri until it was long governed by Massachusetts in 1820.

Maine produces 98% of the nation’s blueberries. It also produces large quantities of apples, potatoes, dairy products, vegetables, poultry and eggs. Aside from these mentioned, Maine is also the country’s leading producer of lobster and sardines. It produces 75 million tins of sardines annually and 63 million pounds of lobster in a year.

Maine boasts of scenic coastlines and mountains that are perfect for vacation purposes. It is home to more than 2,500 lakes and 5,000 streams, and 30 state parks. It attraction destinations include Acadia National Park, preserves much of the wonderful Allagash National Wilderness Waterway, the Wadsworth-Longfellow House in Portland, Roosevelt Campobello International Park, and the St. Croix Island National Monument.

Maine is also known as the Pine Tree State.
