South Carolina Details

South Carolina is a southeast state of the United States. It borders North Carolina to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast and Georgia to the southwest. This state has a total land area of 30,109 sq mi. (77,982 sq km) and 46 counties. It is the 40th largest state in the confederate. It has a total population of 4,479,800 (2008 estimate).

South Carolina is named in honor of Charles I of England. This state is also called the Palmetto State. It became the 8th member of the confederate in May 23, 1788.

South Carolina used to be a part of North Carolina. It officially separated from the latter in 1729. South Carolina was the scene of the extensive military action during the Revolution and during the Civil War which began in 1861. This state is noted to be the first state to secede to the Union.

South Carolina used to be largely agricultural. It boasts of large textile and other mills that produce significant times the output of its farms in cash value. Its products include asbestos, wood, pulp, steel products, chemicals, machinery and apparel. South Carolina ranks 3rd in peach production and 4th in overall tobacco production. It also boasts of massive agricultural commodities such as nursery and greenhouse products, watermelons, peanuts, broilers and turkeys as well a cattle and calves.

Major attractions in South Carolina include Fort Sumter National Monument, Fort Moultrie, Fort Johnson, and aircraft carrier USS Yorktown in Charleston Harbor; the Middleton, Magnolia, and Cypress Gardens in Charleston; Cowpens National Battlefield; the Hilton Head resorts; and the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden in Columbia.

The state capital and the largest city of Rhode Island is Columbia which has an estimated population of 116,278 as of 2008.
