Citrus County is a county located in Florida, United States. This county, also called “The Water Lover’s Florida” has an estimated population of 138,143 as of 2006 census. Its county seat is Inverness, Florida. Citrus County forms part of the Homosassa Springs Micropolitan Statistical Area. This county used to be a part of Hernando County and was named for the county’s citrus trees.

Citrus County has a total land area of 773.15 square miles. It is bordered by Levy County, Florida to the northwest; Marion County, Florida to the northeast; Sumter County, Florida to the east, and; Hernando County, Florida to the south. This county is composed of two incorporated areas (Crystal River and Inverness) and 17 unincorporated areas which include Beverly Hills; Black Diamond; Chassahowitzka; Citrus Hills; Citrus Springs; Floral City; Hernando; Holder; Homosassa Springs; Homosassa; Inverness Highlands North; Inverness Highlands South; Lecanto; Meadowcrest; Pine Ridge; Red Level, and; Sugarmill Woods. Citrus County has two operational local airports: the Crystal River Airport and Inverness Airport. Major highways in and around Citrus County include U.S. Route 19, U.S. Route 41, U.S. Route 98, U.S. Route 44, and County Road 48.

Citrus County, Florida boasts of four major tourist destinations: Crystal River, Floral City, Homosassa, and Inverness. Crystal River in Citrus County, Florida is a six-mile long winding waterway that features 30 springs which connect Kings Bay with the Gulf of Mexico. This river provides a perfect spot for aquatic activities such as swimming, diving, boating, water skiing, fishing and other activities. Floral City is technically not a city, but a census-designated place (CDP) that is located seven miles east of Inverness. This CDP was named after the wild flowers that grow within its area. Floral City features annual Strawberry Festival that showcases live entertainment, family activities and dozens of booths that offer unique items for sale. Homosassa features a 45-feet deep Spring that produces more than 64 million gallons of water per day. This spring creates Homosassa River, a 9-mile stretch that reaches its way to the Gulf of Mexico.
