Jacksonville Florida

Jacksonville is the largest city in Florida. It is located in the northeast corner of the state and has a land area of 885 sq mi, making it the largest city in the United States. It is centered on the banks of the St. Johns River and is bordered by the Nassau County to the north, Baker County to the west, St. Johns County to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Jacksonville is the county seat of Duval County.

Jacksonville was named after Andrew Jackson and was founded in 1791 and was incorporated in 1832. It became a major industrial city and transportation hub right after the Civil war. Statistics say its recent poopulation numbers 807,815, making it the 12th most populated city across the United States.

This city is home to the fourth largest community college of the country. It boasts of universities and colleges which include Florida Community College, the University of North Florida, Jacksonville University, Florida Metropolitan University, Florida Technical College, Remington College, Edward Waters College, the Sanford-Brown Institute, ITT Technical Institute and the University of Phoenix.

Jacksonville takes pride of its rich cultural attractions which include a symphony orchestra, a zoo, many art galleries and museums. It is popular for its Jacksonville Museum of MOdern Art, a 60,000 square foot, six-floor facility, with a permanent collection, traveling exhibitions, educational facilities and a theater. It also boasts of Cummer Museum of Art, the largest fine arts museum in Northeast Florida, which has a large collection of 18th century porcelain figures. For historians, there is the Museum of Science and History and the Museum of Southern History.

This city is home to Alltel Stadium which can accomodate 73,000 spectators. Alltel Stadium hosts NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars as welll as the annual Gator Bowl which happens every New Year’s Day. Aside from Alltel, Jacksonville also has a brand-new 10,000-seat Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville, where the Jacksonville Suns, the AA affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, play minor league baseball. There’s also the Jacksonville Veteran’s Memorial Arena where the barracudas play minor league hockey.

Jacksonville offers unlimited recreational opportunities. Its Jacksonville Beach boasts of a perfect spot for surfing, swimming, sunbathing, fishing and boating. It also boasts of Anastasia State Recreation Area in St. Augustine. Anastasia Recreation Area is a 1,800-acre park with miles of beach and a saltwater lagoon filled with bluefish, pompano, and other bounties of the sea. It also offers than 50 golf courses. Its World Golf Village in nearby St. Augustine has the Golf Hall of Fame, an IMAX theatre and three 18-hole courses, including the only course designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.
