West Virginia Details

West Virginia is a state located in the Appalachian and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States.It is bordered by Pennsylvania and Maryland to the north, Virginia to the east and south, and Kentucky to the west. It has a total land area of 24,230 sq mi(62,755 km2), making it the 41st largest state among all other member-states of the confederate.

West Virginia is named in honor of Elizabeth, “Virgin Queen” of England. This state is also known as the Mountain State due to its hilly and rugged terrain. West Virginia became the 35th member of the confederate in June 20, 1863.

Historical accounts suggest that the first settlement in West Virginia was established on Mill Creek in present-day Berkeley County back in 1731. More settlers arrived upon learning that West Virginia had massive deposits of coal. Other important minerals available in West Virginia include oil, natural gas, and hardwood forests, which cover about 75% of the state’s area.

West Virginia is among the country’s top coal producers. It is also a leading manufacturer of steel, glass, aluminum and chemicals. It also produces large numbers of agricultural commodities such as poultry and eggs, dairy products and apples. Tourism is also imporatnt o the economy of West Virginia.

Major attractions in West Virginia include 37 state parks and recreation areas and nine state forests and two national forests. Popular tourist destinations are Harpers Ferry and New River Gorge National River, The Greenbrier and Berkeley Springs resorts, the scenic railroad at Cass, and the historic homes in the Eastern Panhandle.

The state capital and the largest city of West Virginia is Charleston. This state has an estimated population of 1,812,035 (2008 estimate). Its residents are called West Virginian.
