Washington Details

Washington is state located in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. It is bordered by Idaho to the east, Oregon to the south, Pacific Ocean to the west and the Canadian Province of British Columbia to the north. It has a total land area of 66,544 sq mi. (172,349 sq km), making it the 18th largest member-states of the confederate.

Washington was named in honor of George Washington. This state is also known as Evergreen State. Washington became 42nd member of the confederate in Nov. 11, 1889.

Washington was yet a part of the vast Oregon County when it was visited by various Spanish, American and British explorers who threatened war in the early 1840s. The Oregon Treaty helped avert such potentially destructive war.

Much of Washington’s economy depends on agriculture and its forest. This state is a leading lumber producer and boasts of rich Douglas fir, hemlock, ponderosa and white pine as well spruce, lurch and tree. It grows abundant apples, lentils, dry edible peas, red raspberries, spearmint oil, sweet cherries and apricots. Washington also ranks high in the production of asparagus, grapes, peppermint oil and potatoes. Aside from these mentioned, Washington also provide livestock and livestock products which give significant contributions in their economy.

Washington abounds in manufacturing industries that are dedicated to aircraft and missiles, shipbuilding and other transportation equipment, lumber, food processing, metals and metal products, chemicals and machinery.

The capital of Washington is Olympia and its largest city Seattle. This state has an estimated population of 6,549,224 (2008 estimate) and is the 13th most populated state in the US.
