Montana Details

Montana is a state located in the Western United States. It is characterized by numerous mountain ranges belonging to the Rocky Mountains. This name is taken from the Spanish word montaña which means mountains. It is also called the Treasure State.

Montana has a population of 935,670 and is the 3rd least populated state across the United States. It ranks fourth in terms of land area.

Montana was first explored for France by Francois and Loius-Joseph Verendrye in the 1740s. This state was later acquired by the US from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

Much of Montana’s economy depends on agriculture. Its major products include wheat, barley, sugar beets, oats, rye, seed potatoes, honey and cherries. Cattle and sheep ranching also make significant contributions in its economy. Other products from Montana include copper, coal, lead, zinc, silver, and oil. Large amounts of copper come from Butte which is also the center of Montana.

Montana boasts of countless tourist destinations that are perfect for fishing, skiing and dude ranching. These attraction sites include Glacier National Park which has 60 glaciers, 200 lakes, and many streams with good trout fishing. Other major points of interest include the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, Virginia City, Yellowstone National Park, Fort Union Trading Post and Grant-Kohr’s Ranch National Historic Sites, and the Museum of the Plains Indians at Browning.

The capital of Montana is Helena and its residents are called Montanan.
