Highland California

Highland California, in San Bernardino county, is 4 miles E of San Bernardino, California (center to center) and 16 miles NE of Riverside, California. It’s flanked by the San Bernardino and San Gabriel Mountains. The city was named after the close by tableland and is surrounded by a large urban area. Some of the city’s schools have been named “California Distinguished Schools.”
The Spaniards explored the area in 1772. Settlements were established in 1856. Henry Rabel constructed bath houses and a small hotel to attract customers who were fond of the area’s medicinal springs. A significant increase in tourism occurred with the construction of Harlem Springs in 1877. In 1885 the Serrano Indians were relocated by the government to the San Manuel Reservation.
From 1883 to 1888 the North Fork Water Ditch provided irrigation water which allowed growers to establish a large number of orange groves. The population grew significantly and the orange and lemon packing facilities were thriving due to the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1881. The Highland Lumber Company took advantage of the trees located in the nearby mountains. Highland was incorporated in 1987.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.9 square miles (48.9 km²). 18.8 square miles (48.6 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (0.71%) is water.

Highland is served by two public school districts: Redlands Unified and San Bernardino Unified School Districts (the boundaries are generally defined by City Creek; residents east of City Creek are in the Redlands Unified School District while those west of City Creek are served by San Bernardino City Unified School District).
Highland is home to a one of a kind library and environmental learning center. The Highland Sam J. Racadio Library and Environmental Learning Center is a gold rated L.E.E.D. (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)building. It holds thousands of books, cd’s, DVD’s, and other items. It offers free computer access and wifi. It has a rooftop garden and is home to animals, amphibians, and reptiles from around the globe.

The San Bernardino County Museum, Edwards Mansion, Redlands Historic House and the Kimberly Crest House & Gardens are some of the notable attractions in the area.
