New York Details

New York is a Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, Lake Erie and Ontario and the Canadian Province of Ontario on the northwest and the province of Quebec to the north. It has a total land area of 47,214 sq mi. (122,284 sq km), making it the 27th largest state among all other member-states of the confederate.

New York was named in honor of the Duke of York. This state is also known as the Empire State. New York became the 11th member of the confederate in July 26, 1788.

New York was first discovered by Giovanni da Verrazano, an Italian navigator who was sailing for France in 1524. Henry Hudson then explored this island in 1609 and claimed this state for France. The first permanent Dutch settlement was later established at Fort Orange which is recently called Albany.

New York is considered the nerve center of the entire United States. It ranks first in terms of manufacturing, foreign trade, commerce and banking, book and magazine publishing as well as theatrical production. It is the site of the world-famous John F. Kennedy International Airport which is among the world’s busiest airports. New York is also home of the New York Stock Exchange, the largest in the whole world. Its industries include printing and publishing, industrial machinery and equipment as well as electronic equipment, and instruments. This state also looks up to convention and tourist business as important sources of income.

New York is also a leading producer of cattle and calves, corn and poultry, vegetables and fruits. It is also a leading wine producer.

The capital of New York is Albany and its largest city is the New York City. This state has an estimated population of 19,490,297 (2008 estimate).

Residents of New York are called New Yorker.
