New Jersey Details

New Jersey is a Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by New York to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and Delaware to the south and Pennsylvania across the Delaware River to the west. It has a total land area of 7,417 sq mi. (19,210 sq km), making it the 47th largest state among all other member-states of the confederate.

The name New Jersey is derived from the Channel Isle of Jersey. This state is also known as the Garden State. New Jersey became the 3rd member of the confederate in Dec. 18, 1787.

New Jersey used to be involved with New York. It was organized as an English colony under Gov. Philip Carteret in 1664. This colony was later divided between Carteret and a group of English Quakers and was later formed into united crown colony in 1702 administered by the royal governor of New York. It was then separated from New York in 1738 under the auspices of its own royal governor, Lewis Morris. This state saw much fighting during the American Revolution.

New Jersey proves to be a widely industrialized state these days. It boasts of products from over 15,000 factories that are delivered overnight to almost 60 million people. This state has one of the foremost research centers in the world. It houses large oil refineries. It provides manufactured items such as pharmaceuticals, instruments, machinery, electrical goods and apparel. Apart from its manufacturing industries, New Jersey also boasts of productive farmlands that cover almost 20% of its total land area. It is a leading producer of almost all garden vegetables as well as cranberries, blueberries and peaches. It also supplies poultry, dairy products and seafood.

Tourism is the second largest industry in New Jersey. This state boasts of numerous resort areas. Among its major tourist destinations include the Delaware Water Gap, the Edison National Historic Site in West Orange, Princeton University, Liberty State Park, Jersey City, and the N.J. State Aquarium in Camden.

The state capital of New Jersey is Trenton and its largest city is Newark. This state has an estimated population of 8,682,661 (2008 estimate).

Residents of New Hampshire are called New Jerseyite or New Jerseyan.
