Maryland the seventh state to join the United States Constitution, it has the largest median household income of any state gaining $70,545 in a year. The state has two nicknames mainly the Old Line State and the Free State. Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon explored the Maryland’s northern boundary line in 1763 until it ceded to form the District of Columbia, a federal district that was established by congressional acts of 1790 and 1791 under George Washington. In 1814, the British Empire attempts to capture Baltimore which is the bombardment of the Fort Mchenry, Maryland becomes a slave state but remained in the Union until Marylanders fought both sides and a lot of families were divided during the war. To try to gain more settlers, Maryland used the headright system, a legal grant of land to settlers which was originated in Jamestown. The Maryland government awarded land to people who transported colonist to Maryland.

Today Maryland produces more seafood, oysters, crabs, clams, and fishes because it is has one of the longest waterfronts of any state mainly the Chesapeake Bay.
